Does Owning a Dog Help You Live Longer?

Posted by on

Dog ownership has lots of benefits and we can now count heart health as one of them. A recent study from the journal Scientific Reports gathered data on 3.4 million people over an 11-year period and found out that owners of dogs have a 24% lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease. The study showed even better benefits among people who have experienced heart attacks or strokes.

This is great news for 68 percent of American households who have dogs. According to the AKC, dog owners get around 30 minutes more exercise a day than non-pet owners (as anyone trying to sleep past the time of a dog’s morning routine can attest). Also owning a dog increases social interaction and overall well being which are both huge health benefits.

Just by simply petting a dog can lower blood pressure. Physical and mental health benefits are the pathways by which dog owners live longer lives.

Many dog owners will agree, the main reason for owning a dog is the sheer joy of it.
